Chi Nei Tsang (CNT) is an ancient form of bodywork from China that has been used for thousands of years for healing and maintaining good health. It uses a combination of massage, breath work and chi kung (energy management) to clear the body of physical toxins and emotional charges. Essentially it trains our internal organs to work more efficiently.
It is said that the internal organs are the “source of life and death” * because the quality of our health is a direct reflection of the state of our organs. Thus it is vital that we look after our ‘vital’ organs. Chi Nei Tsang works by gently massaging and connecting directly to our internal organs, thus enhancing their functioning and our health.
Chi = Energy / Information (Energy Impregnated with Information)
Nei Tsang = Internal Organs
Therefore, Chi Nei Tsang = ‘working the energy of the internal organs’
CNT comes from Thailand and China and has been used for several thousand years. Since the 1970’s this technique as moved from China to the West, primarily due to Master Mantak Chia bringing it to the public through books and workshops.
Many ancient cultures emphasize the importance of working on the abdomen. For example, in Samoa, traditional Samoan massage starts by working on the belly as they see this as the most important part of the body to massage.
Because we store our unresolved emotional issues in the organs, many people have an unconscious feeling of discomfort at the thought of being massaged on the abdomen. However, this fear is purely in the mind. Once the person experiences the gentle touch of massage on their belly, their body intelligence realizes that it is actually extremely nurturing and calming to be touched here.
On a purely physical level, working on the abdomen will help to clear toxins that accumulate in the organs, fascia (connective tissue), lymphatic system and skin. In the womb we took in food and excreted waste through the umbilicus, and our body has a memory of storing toxins in this area of the body.
Fortunately our body has an innate intelligence – it is the same intelligence that allows it to beat the heart and digest food without us telling it to do so. When we are massaged on the abdomen, any stagnant or blocked energy in this area is released and transformed into energy that the body then uses for healing.
Seemingly miraculous stories of healing fibroids, cancer, ovarian cysts etc are not uncommon. The body is actually a self-healing mechanism if we give it the opportunity to do so.
Another key benefit of CNT is it brings the person into a deep state of relaxation which is the only place where healing can occur.
On an emotional level the abdomen is where we tend to build up tension and emotion. Unexpressed negative emotions are actually stored inside different organs. For example, anger affects the liver, worry affects the spleen and fear affects the kidneys. Thus we say “I was sick with worry, I was cold with fear, I was livid with anger”.
If we do not address these unexpressed emotional charges, they may block the clear flow of energy in our organs, leading to sickness and dis-ease. It is said that “we digest our emotions the same way we learn to eat” - working on the abdomen helps us to digest our emotions so that we can let go of any unreleased emotional charges.
Anyone can benefit from Chi Nei Tsang. Whether you have physical symptoms such as menstrual cramps, constipation, asthma, unresolved emotional trauma, or are just looking to maintain your health, Chi Nei Tsang can help by encouraging your organs to work better. It also helps people to take care of themselves before they get ill and is therefore an excellent preventative and self-care modality.
